What Are the Differences Between Rocket League Cars?

There are many different cars in Rocket League, allowing players to modify many aspects of their vehicles. While there are many items that modify the look of your cars in Rocket League, none are more important than the car bodies.

As the most basic part of every car design in Rocket League, your car body will define almost every important gameplay aspect of your vehicle. Most importantly, a car body defines the hitbox of your vehicle, meaning that it also dictates how well your car will fair on different positions in the game.

The most basic difference between all Rocket League cars is the hitbox. There are also different classes and rarities of cars in Rocket League. Here’s everything you need to know about all the different types of Rocket League cars.

Starter Rocket League Cars

The starter Rocket League cars are not only the most popular cars due to how easy it is to unlock them, but they also contain possibly the most useful and best Rocket League car in the game, the Octane. Unlocking starter Rocket League cars is super easy. All you have to do is log in to the game, and finish the tutorial and you will be rewarded with the free Common Rocket League cars for starting players. While you get the unpainted versions for free by completing the tutorial, the painted variants are rarer and must be unlocked separately. The starter Rocket League cars include:

Common Rocket League Cars

Common cars are the second easiest ones to obtain, right after the starter cars in Rocket League. Common cars can be easily opened in an item drop and are also often included in rewards for completing Rocket Pass levels. In addition, you can unlock common Rocket League cars as item drops for completing matches. They don’t show up in the item shop and are rarely part of trading, since they are often very cheap (aside from certain painted variants, which can be quite expensive). The common Rocket League cars include:

  • Merc
  • Hotshot
  • Gizmo
  • X-devil
  • Backfire
  • Road Hog
  • Paladin
  • Venom

Platform Exclusives

There are a number of different Rocket League cars unlockable only if you’re playing on a certain platform. These most often include crossovers from other signature game series for the platform. While some of them are available instantly to any console owner, some of them have to be completed by finishing simple quests. These car bodies also do not come in painted variants, and while they can only be used with their default look, they still are a great way to re-create the visuals of your favorite games in Rocket League. The platform-exclusive cars in Rocket League are:

  • Samus Gunship – Nintendo Switch Exclusive
  • Mario NSR – Nintendo Switch Exclusive
  • Luigi NSR – Nintendo Switch Exclusive
  • Hogsticker – Xbox One Exclusive
  • Armadillo – Xbox One Exclusive
  • Sweet Tooth – PS4 Exclusive

Car bodies of a very rare quality can be obtained through item drops or purchased cyclically in the item shop. There’s also a chance that you’ll get a very rare quality car body whenever you finish a match, but it’s not going to happen very often. In fact, many players go through their entire Rocket League career without getting very rare items from a drop after completing a match. To get any of the very rare cars you will have to trade with other players or get very lucky. The very rare cars in Rocket League include:
