All You Need To Know About Rocket League Hot Wheels Collab

Mattel has been in the limelight lately, with Barbie hitting the big screens and becoming one of the highest-grossing films in movie history. However, the company has created many other iconic toys, one of which is Hot Wheels. That’s why today we’ll discuss Rocket League’s legendary collaboration with this iconic brand of miniature cars. It may not be as good as a movie with Margot Robbie, but it’s still pretty cool.

A Little More About Hot Wheels

Lately, we’ve been talking a lot about Rocket League’s collaborations. These include partnerships with iconic brands like McLaren and Lamborghini, as well as with blockbuster movie franchises like Fast and Furious and Jurassic Park. However, there is one more such project that we haven’t yet covered, and that is, of course, Rocket League Hot Wheels.

Hot Wheels was first introduced in 1968 by Mattel founder Elliot Handler. His dream was to become a major competitor to Matchbox, another toy company that had conquered the market with its miniature car models. However, he wanted to gain an advantage by adopting a slightly different edge than his rivals, as his products were to look a bit more like old-school American “hot rod” cars, that is, vehicles modified by adding large engines to them to provide additional acceleration. And that’s how Hot Wheels’ unique look came about.

One of the Biggest Car Brands

Today it is one of the toy brands with the most success in the market. Since its establishment, Mattel has produced more than 6 billion copies of these miniature cars. In fact, every year 519 million of them are made, and later sold in 150 countries.

The brand has made history not only in the toy industry, but also in the automotive world. Car fans began creating their own collections of miniature Hot Wheels models, and Mattel produced a total of 20 life-size cars, the first of which was the iconic Twin Mill in 2001.

Hot Wheels in Rocket League

Given Hot Wheels’ impact on the car industry, it’s no surprise that one of the world’s biggest games revolving around cars wanted to create a collaboration with this iconic IP. Then again, Mattel was very open to such a partnership, knowing the potential of the gaming world and having already joined forces with Need for Speed before.

In total, Rocket League and Hot Wheels teamed up 4 times from 2017-2019.

Twin Mill III and Bone Shaker

In early 2017, when DLCs were still purchased separately and not through the Item Shop, Rocket League released two Hot Wheels cars. These were:

  • Twin Mill III
  • Bone Shaker

Both of them were legacy battle-cars, with the first one using a plank hitbox, while the second an octane one. The DLC also included three other Hot Wheels-themed items, namely:

  • the Hot Wheels topper
  • the Shark Bite topper
  • the Hot Wheels antenna

The Hot Wheels Triple Threat DLC Pack

As part of its second collaboration with this legendary toy brand, in September 24, 2018, Rocket League released another bundle, specifically the Hot Wheels® Triple Threat DLC Pack. It cost a total of $5.99 and included a number of licensed items. These were:

3 Car Bodies:

  • Gazella GT
  • MR11
  • Fast 4WD

Decals:

  • 50TH Anniversary
  • Diecast
  • Hot Wheels Race Team
  • Sleek

Wheels:

  • Gazella GT
  • MR11
  • Fast 4WD

Toppers:

  • Hot Wheels® Gorilla
  • Hot Wheels® Snake
  • Hot Wheels® Spider

The entire collaboration was part of Hot Wheels’ 50th anniversary celebration.

The Hot Wheels Rocket League RC Rivals Set

In 2018, the collaboration between the two brands finally went beyond the realm of games and entered the real world.

An exclusive Hot Wheels set containing two iconic cars from Rocket League, namely Octane and Dominus, appeared on store shelves. The toys were not only limited edition, but their purchasers could also enjoy incredible fun thanks to the ability to control them with special apps for their phones. What’s more, anyone who purchased the set received a special code to unlock exclusive in-game content, namely:

  • Hot Wheels Goal Explosion
  • Hot Wheels RC Rivals Topper
  • two RC Rivals Decals for Octane and Dominus

The price of the set was $179.99.

Hot Wheels Rocket League Five-Pack

As the first series of toys created in partnership with Epic Games was hugely popular, in 2019, Mattel released a special five-pack that included all the car models that made their way into Rocket League, as part of their first two collaborations. These were:

  • Gazella GT
  • MR11
  • Fast 4WD
  • Twin Mill III
  • Bone Shaker

Limited Octane Hot Wheels Model

As part of the latest partnership between the two brands, a limited-edition 1:64 scale Octane Hot Wheels car appeared in select toy stores in 2018. A few months later, in 2019, a lime-green version also hit the market. Today, both of them are among the most expensive models Mattel has ever produced.

Conclusions

Hot Wheels is the brand with which Rocket League has collaborated the most times in the history of all its projects. This is hardly surprising, given that both trademarks are icons in the automotive world. If you were one of the lucky few who got to buy one of the limited-edition cars, you certainly have reason to be proud. However, if you didn’t succeed in doing so, no need to worry. We are almost certain that RL will enter into many more partnerships with Mattel, and Hot Wheels will continue to appear in its arenas.
