How To Enable Cross-play

Rocket League is one of the most popular online games, with millions of players competing online at the same time. Still, this community is spread across 3 different platforms: PC, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch and Xbox. Each version of the multiplayer game has its own servers, so that everyone can play Rocket League with similar controls and response time.

While this makes for a balanced environment, sometimes you might simply want to play Rocket League with a friend who owns the game on a different platform, or simply switch up your usual experience and try something new. Either way, the good news is that it’s possible to play Rocket League cross-platform with other versions of the game. Want to learn how? Here’s our guide!

What Is Rocket League Cross-platform Play

Rocket League offers gamers a way to play cross-platform with their friends on different platforms. This means that you can, for example, play together with someone on PlayStation while you play on PC. You can even connect multiple consoles, meaning that you can have fun with your friends no matter what platforms you use.

Playing cross-platform functions just like normal Rocket League games. You can create custom matches with your cross-platform friends, join private match games, and even play normal matchmaking. All cross-platform play will contribute to your Rocket Pass progress as well, allowing for a cross-platform progression.

Are There Any Limitations To Rocket League Cross-Platform Play?

Generally speaking, cross-platform play in Rocket League doesn’t change much about the gameplay itself. You can play Rocket League with other players on other platforms, and enjoy the classic Rocket League gameplay with your friends on other platforms, just like you would with Rocket League players using the same device as you.

Still, there are some limitations to cross-platform in Rocket League. Most importantly, Rocket League platform-exclusive items won’t be visible to cross-players. This means that certain cosmetics, like the PlayStation exclusive Sweet Tooth skin, simply won’t be visible to other players who don’t share a platform. However, if in cross-play matchmaking you encounter someone using the same platform, they will be able to see the exclusive items.

Also, Rocket League cross-platform trading is highly limited. If you want to trade Rocket League items to players on different platform, you won’t be able to trade items purchased in the Rocket League game shop for real money. Outside of these two issues, cross-platform play for Rocket League should function smoothly, and allow you to easily connect your game with players using other platforms. However, if you want to buy Rocket League items, consider purchasing from a trader on the same platform as yours.

How To Enable Crossplay In Rocket League?

Cross-platform play can easily be enabled in Rocket League settings menu. You can also disable cross-platform play at any time if you ever change your mind. To enable Rocket League cross-platform play:

  1. After you launch Rocket League select the settings menu.
  2. Go to the gameplay tab
  3. Check or un-check the cross-platform play box

And voila! You now have Rocket League cross-platform gameplay enabled. You can now play with other players on different platforms and participate in cross-platform matchmaking. Whenever you want to disable cross-platform play, just go to the setting and uncheck the box again.

How To Enable Cross-platform Progression?

If you often play on different platforms or enjoy a cross-platform game on different systems now and then, you’ll be happy to know that there’s a feature that allows you to use a single Rocket League account to play on all the platforms. You will be able to share your Rocket League inventory and rank across different game systems and keep all of your progression.

To do this, you must first designate one version of the game as your primary platform. This is the account that will be transferred to all the other systems that you want to use. To do this:

  1. Go to the Rocket League website and log-in
  2. Go to your account settings
  3. You should see your current preferred platform there. Select Change Primary and follow the instructions

Once you ink your Rocket League account with other platforms, you can use other systems to contribute to your rank progression while you play. Bear in mind, however, that platform-exclusive items won’t be available to you when you play your account on a different platform.

In Conclusion

Rocket League has a large player base, spread across different platforms. This doesn’t mean, however, that you have to be limited to playing on your platform alone. Try cross-platform matchmaking today, and see how it works out for you.
