Rocket League: All About Cross-Platform Trading

Rocket League is one of the most popular games in the world, available on almost every possible platform. The range of its content is huge, with players from all over the world buying and trading new items every day. Unfortunately, Epic Games has made this process a bit more difficult by banning most cross-platform exchanges. Why? We’ll explain it all to you in a moment. In addition, we will also show you how to get around this ban and EVEN how to make some profit from Rocket League trades. Read our article and learn everything you need to know about cross-platform trading in Rocket League.

What Is Cross-Platform Trading?

Cross-platform trading is the process of exchanging in-game items between all the platforms on which a game can be played. This means that items purchased on PC, are exchanged for an item purchased on PS4, for example. Unfortunately, this possibility has been mostly blocked by Epic Games, and we’ll explain why in a moment. But first, let’s go through all the basics about Rocket League and its cross-platform features.

What Platforms is Rocket League Available On?

Rocket League, originally developed by Psyonix and now owned by Epic Games, is a worldwide phenomenon available on almost every possible platform. It was first introduced to Windows and PlayStation 4 in 2015 and then, at the beginning of 2016, it was ported to Xbox One. Later that year, ports to macOS and Linux were also announced, and finally, the game was released to Nintendo Switch in late 2017. To summarize, Rocket League is currently available on:

  • PlayStation 5
  • PlayStation 4
  • PC
  • Xbox One
  • Xbox Series S
  • Xbox Series X
  • Nintendo Switch

The macOS and Linux versions are no longer supported.

Can One Person Play Rocket League on Various Platforms?

Yes! In fact, trading cross-platform is only possible if you’re playing on various platforms. Only then will you be able to transfer your inventory. However, in order to do so, all your platforms must be connected to your Epic Games Account. Let’s now go through the exact process of how to do that.

So, linking Rocket League accounts can actually be done from all the different platforms, but we think doing it on the Epic Games website is the easiest. Therefore, this will be the way we will show you.

  1. Go to EpicGames.com and click the big “Log-in” button
  2. Choose to sign in through Epic Games (trust us, it’s the easiest option)
  3. Create an Epic Account if you don’t have one, or simply Sign in.
  4. Select the Rocket League platform you want to connect with
  5. Choose your Primary Platform

Why Do You Need to Set a Primary Platform?

During the process of linking Rocket League accounts, you will be asked to choose a primary platform. This means that all your Rocket League progress information, such as your Professional Rank, will be stored on this platform. Your primary platform will also contain your entire inventory from all Rocket League accounts. However, it is worth noting that this does not mean that all of the items are being transferred to the main platform. Most remain on their accounts of origin.

Choose your primary platform wisely, because although it can be changed, you can only do so every 24 hours. Typically, Rocket League players select the platform on which they have the most XP and the highest Competitive Rank.

Why Do You Need to Trade Cross-Platform?

So if you’ve ever used the Rocket League cross-platform feature, you’re probably aware of the fact that most items cost different amounts of credits, depending on the platform. Well, players noticed that and saw an opportunity for profit. For example, if you transfer an item from PC, to another platform where it is worth more, say Xbox, and then sell it, you have probably made a profit.

BUT, you need to be aware that, like any other item in Rocket League, credits also change their value depending on the platform. Therefore, even if you have moved an item to another platform where it is theoretically more expensive, this does not necessarily mean that you have actually gained anything. It all depends on the current values of Rocket League items.

How to Make a Profit on Cross-Platform Trading?

Making money from cross-platform trading is not easy. It requires time and patience, because you need to be observant of the current market situation. Credit prices across different platforms depend entirely on the good old law of supply and demand. This means that they are constantly changing, and only if you make the trade at the right time can you actually gain something. As we mentioned, 2,000 credits bought on PC and 2,000 credits bought on Xbox can mean completely different things on the same day.

Why Epic Games Does Not Allow Cross-Platform Trading?

Although Rocket League is very proud of its cross platform feature, they have made the decision to tradelock many items. You may ask yourselves: Why would they do that?

Well, let us explain.

First of all, it’s worth noting that not all Rocket League items have a cross-trading ban (if that were the case, this article wouldn’t exist). The official Epic Games website clearly states that only PURCHASED items are banned from leaving the platform they originated from.

The reason for this is that purchased items are considered representations of real money and therefore cannot leave the platform from which they originated. This is regulated by the Terms of Use of various platforms, such as Microsoft and PlayStation, which state that no value of real money can leave the platform. So for example, if you buy credits, you can’t transfer them between platforms because they cost you real money. However, if you obtained free credits through the Rocket Pass, then these can be transferred across platforms because you did not pay for them, so they are not representations of money and “technically” transfer no real value.

Which Rocket League Items Can Be Cross-Platform Traded?

As already mentioned, any item that has not been purchased (or in any way acquired with money) can be traded cross-platform. This includes the following items:

  • Non-Crate Items
  • Golden Crate Items (Except ’20)
  • Rocket League Championship Series Items
  • Event Rewards
  • BluePrints
  • Aplha & Beta Items

How to Conduct a Cross-Platform Trade?

Once you have linked all Rocket League platforms to your Epic Games Account and selected your primary platform, all of your inventory should be available there. This means that all of your Rocket League items that are eligible for cross-platform transfers are now available on your Epic Games account and on the linked platforms. Now, in order to trade items, all you need to do is follow the normal player-to-player trading process. This is an inherent feature offered by Rocket League. However, keep in mind that the game does not provide you with the opportunity to find other players who might be interested in a particular trade. You’ll have to do that on your own. We recommend checking out some of the most popular sites, discord groups, or online forums. However, as with any online deals, beware of scammers.

Remember, too, that since Epic Games took over Rocket League, there are certain conditions that players must meet if they want to trade items. If you’re not sure what those conditions are, we recommend reading our comprehensive guide that explains How to Unlock Trading in Epic Games’ Version of Rocket League.

Conclusions
